"Serenity" is a spin off movie from the tragically short lived Joss Whedon series "Firefly" which was axed after only one season.
THE PLOT:
River Tam and her brother Simon are hiding out from the totalitarian government that experimented with River's brain. They are aboard the space-freighter Serenity. Captained by a down on his luck, no faith soldier, the crew of Serenity must take jobs (legal or not) while avoiding the Alliance, and keeping the Tams safe. But when things get out of hand as the true extent of River's power becomes clear, the Alliance sends a new Operative to make sure what River knows doesn't get out. How will the crew of Serenity deal with this new threat? And what exactly does River know that the Operative is willing to kill for?

RIK says
: I first encountered the crew of the Serenity in Forbidden
Planet in London where Seph and I were killing time before an audition for, if
you please, Rentaghost - the
musical! (They didn't call us back!). Anyway Forbidden Planet were
playing the trailer for Serenity and it looked fairly cool so, being me, I
bought the book. Two weeks later having loved the story and characters I saw the
film and it was everything I expected and much more. So often if you read the
book (even one like this, based on the screen play of the film) then the film
fails to live up to your expectations. Not so with Serenity. To quote
C.J.Malone (who I discovered, as usual, knew all
about the film and it's origins) : "It's a small film about a small crew with
the rest of the universe after them!" It is, and it manages to be action packed,
tragic, scary and laugh out loud funny into the bargain. If, like me, you haven't heard of the Firefly class ship Serenity and her crew then here
they are.
L - R : Capt. Mal Reynolds - Nathan Fillon / Zoe Washburne - Gina Torres / Jayne Cobb - Daniel Baldwin / Dr Simon Tam - Sean Maher / Wash - Alan Tudyk

This motley mob have the Galaxy authorities on their tail in the form of a calm, refined, pleasantly spoken, homicidal maniac known as "The Operative". Secrets are shared, ordeals faced and hilarious one liners delivered with superb deadpan timing particularly by Fillon (Mal) and Tudyk (Wash). Any film that can get away with the following in the establishing scene on the ship has got to have something going for it :
Wash : ...this landing is going to get pretty interesting!
Mal : Define "Interesting"?
Wash (Neutrally) : Oh God! Oh God! We're gonna die!
Mal (Hits the Com) : This is the Captain speaking. There's a problem with our entry sequence; we may experience slight turbulence and then explode.
The thing about Serenity is that it also manages to deliver a cracking story and real emotion. It is a great film. Get the DVD now!
